From the Locomotive d’or to the Chèvrefeuille barge of the Convivencia Festival, the loud voices and undulating melodies, colored brasses and hair-raising guitars of the Super Rail Band from Bamako travel from swamp blues to urban mandingue rock. This band of the Buffet-Hotel of Bamako station, will be to modern mandingue music what E.T.Mensah were to high-life (Ghana), Mahlathini to mbaqanga (South Africa) or I.K. Dairo to juju music (Nigeria). Its successive singers – the most famous in the West are Salif Keita and Mory Kanté – have been the undisputed superstars of the Malian scene until the birth of Wassoulou music in the nineties. Encounter on the edge of the Canal du Midi!
